Top Tips for Working Outside in Poor Weather Conditions

Few of us enjoy cold or wet and windy weather. And it's worse when you have to work outside in it.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) reports the largest percentage of accidents in the winter are entirely preventable, such as poor lighting and slips and trips on wet ground. So when it comes to maintaining site safety, what else should be considered:

10 simple tips for staying safe

Check your shoes. Wear the correct footwear and be mindful of additional hazards such as wet leaves, ice and snow
Stockpile. Prepare for snow and ice by storing of salt and grit in advance.
Wear the correct personal protective equipment (PPE). Make sure it fits as it should if you've layered up your clothing. Too much padding can cause the illuminated bands on some hi-vis equipment to shift, losing their effectiveness.
Maintain a good blood circulatiion, particularly if you're exposed to vibrations from power tools. The cold weather can take its toll on the body, so keep warm and improve blood circulation. The simple addition of adequate hats, gloves and jackets can make all the difference.
Don't let water supplies freeze - store them inside.
Warm cabins and offices adequately.
Stock vehicles with screen wash and de-icer to ensure driver safety.
Keep all vehicle lights clean to ensure good visibility for the driver and for others to see you.
Talk. Keep in touch with everyone on site during cold spells and ensure any lone workers have a means of contact. Where possible, work in pairs.
Drink warm, sweet drinks to keep up energy levels, as well as keep you warm on the inside.

How Thick Does my Lead Have To Be? (ie, which Code does my job need?)

Well, that all depends on job you've got planned. Rolled lead sheet is available in various thicknesses, known as codes. Each code is recommended for certain use(s). And it's just your luck that we sell codes 3-8 from just £1.78/kg!

Once known as milled lead, rolled lead has been produced since the mid-1700s. Nowadays, rolled lead is used for roofing and weathering, is commonly used with dormer windows, flat roofs and chimney.

British and European Standard (BSEN) 12588:2006 specifies thickness tolerances and chemical composition required to produce a consistent micro-structure. The minimal variance in thickness means when you fit lead sheet to a roof, the extent of thermal movement can be accurately predicted and the correct fixing method adopted. This is particularly relevant when considering thermal movement and appropriate design and fixing methods, and gives you peace of mind that the job will be weather tight and not be subject to cracking due to a lack of thermal movement properties in other types of lead.

The informal training session introduced Dover roofing companies to PRO GRP advanced glass-fibre roofing system. Attendees gained a thorough insight into the advantages of the product, and learnt how to prepare, apply and finish the system.

How to Clean your Roof's Gutters

Good drainage on your roof is a very important aspect to taking care of your home's structural well-being. Your gutters and downspouts must be kept clear to prevent water from overflowing or backing up and causing damage, such as erosion, leaks and, after long periods of time, the unsettling of your building's foundation.

It's a messy job but it has to be done. Ideally, you should clean your gutters at least twice a year; more often if you live in a wooded area as the build-up of leaves and twigs will cause problems faster.

Maintaining your roof gutters

The tools

Plastic scoop - a great gutter-cleaning tool
Gloves - these will protect your hands from the lurking debris in the gutter that could contain anything from sharp twigs to dead animals
Ladder - make sure it's tall enough to let you reach the gutters comfortably and safely
Hose/watering can - you'll need water to flush out the debris
Plumber's snake - to clean the downspouts easily

The gutters

To clean the gutters shovel out leaves and other debris with the plastic scoop. As you work, move the ladder frequently along the gutter. Do not lean or bend to reach to either side or you may lose your balance and end up falling from the ladder.

After cleaning out all the loose debris, flush the gutters with a garden hose or a watering can.

The downspouts

Check the downspouts by flushing them with the hose. If a downspout is clogged, break up the clog with a plumber's snake fed down through the opening in the gutter. Flush out any remaining debris with the hose.

To keep the downspouts clear, use a wire leaf strainer at each one. Insert a leaf strainer into each downspout opening along the gutters, then push it in just far enough to hold it steady. The strainer will prevent sticks and other debris from entering the downspout and clogging it.

After cleaning out the gutters, let them dry thoroughly and inspect them for signs of damage. Rust spots and holes can be mended with scrap wire screening and asphalt roof cement.

Leaf guards

Many homeowners use plastic or metal screening leaf guards on their gutters to keep leaves from building up, however, they're not effective against leaf fragments, leaf cases and other small debris that can go right through the screening. Gutters covered by leaf guards must still be cleaned regularly.

How to Repair or Replace a Broken Roof Tile

How to repair existing roof tiles

Using a wire brush, clean the cracked roof tile
To seal the roof tile, apply cement with a putty knife to the cracked area of your tile
When cement has set, place the tile back on the roof

How to replace roofing tiles

Scrape the cement around the effected roof tile with a chisel taking care not to break other tile
Place the crowbar under the roof tile resting directly above the cracked roof tile and lift off
Gently tap the crowbar with a hammer and chisel to free the cracked roof tile
Use pliers to remove any nails holding the roof tile clip (used to hold the roof tile in place); if the clip has rusted, replace it
Apply roof cement along the edge of the replacement roof tile
Slide the roof tile into place, clip it back into place and press down firmly

Which VELUX flashing do I need?

Flashings create a weather-tight seal around the window. The built-in guttering forms a mini-drainage system, allowing rainwater to run around the outside of the window and off the roof effectively. What You Need to Know About Your Roofing Battens

Whether you're building a new house, refurbishing an old property or would just like to replace your old and tired looking roof, you'll be making a choice from a wide and diverse range of roof coverings which are available on the market.

Your final choice should be based not only on the aesthetics of the roof, and how it matches your property, but also very importantly, on the performance of the roof. Its primary function is to provide a protective and weatherproof covering for your house and all its valuable contents. That’s why the substrate to which the roof covering is fixed should be chosen correctly. Most people don’t even think about the roofing battens, also called laths, as they are hidden by the roof covering, but they perform vital functions on the roof.

Did you know that if a roof is built with poorly graded battens (i.e. ones that do not meet the requirements of BS 5534) that it is almost certainly will invalidate any warranties such as NHBC or Co-Partnership?

Why do roofs need rafters?

Battens have a specific standard and quality requirement and this is explained in BS 5534, the code of practice for slating and tiling pitched roofs and vertical cladding. Batterns act as a:

Structural element of the roof and give rigidity to the structure, particularly when modern trussed rafters are used
Guide of straight, consistent rows for the roof covering
Anchor for the nails and clips used to secure the tiles or slates - a sub-standard timber batten may not provide sufficient pull-out resistance for the fixing nails, leading to subsequent failure of the roof
Load bearing and must be strong enough to carry the “dead loads” (weight of the roof covering and possible standing snow) and “imposed loads” (wind) of the roof (did you realise that an average house roof covered in concrete interlocking roof tiles carries approximately 5 tonnes of concrete on it?)
Safe method of working on a roof - HSE Guidance Note 33 (HSG 33) state rafters set at 600mm centres using graded battens to BS 5534

Rafter specifications

The rules governing the types of roofing batten allowed are all contained within the British Standard Code of Practice for Slating & Tiling, BS5534: 2003+ A1:2010. This specifies the type and size of timber to be used for different rafter spacings and roof coverings, and any defects that can and cannot be allowed.

The section size of the batten is very important. Any batten measuring less than 25mm in thickness is classed as “under-measure” and should be rejected as it could be unstable and unsafe.

As well as size, the British Standard deals with various other defects typical to timber, which roofing contractors have to consider when sourcing his material. These include:

Wane
Slope of grain
Face knots and side knots
Resin pockets
Insect attack
Rot and decay
Splits and fissures
Preservative treatment

In addition, each piece of batten has to be clearly marked with the following:

The name or identity of the supplier
The sectional size
The timber species type
The grade of the batten/Graded BS 5534

If you're installing your own roof covering, then any of the reputable roofing batten manufacturers or suppliers in the UK will be able to advise you on all of the above.

Sourcing the correct batten

A good roofing contractor will be familiar with sourcing the correct batten and has three choices of material:

Factory graded batten – often coloured red. This is batten that has either been mechanically or visually graded at source and is guaranteed to meet all the performance requirements of the British Standard without any further time-consuming grading on site by the roofing contractor. This also means less waste, making it a very cost-effective option.

Part graded batten – the most common type of roofing batten used in the UK. If a high quality timber is sourced, from a reputable manufacturer, the batten normally only requires a final grade on site by the roofing contractor to ensure that it meets the requirements of the British Standard. There are a variety of grades of batten and to meet the requirements the contractor needs to mark each batten to show it has been graded to BS 5534. Many re-roofing projects now fall within building regulations.

Ungraded batten – usually home grown species and requiring involved grading on site to remove all the defects listed above. Often sold cheaply, it's a false economy as the waste produced by the grading process is very high. It's not recommended for roofing.

Ask your roofing contractor for evidence that the batten he is using is either fully factory graded or that his method statement includes details of how his operatives will grade the battens on site to match the British Standard. You should also request a copy of the batten manufacturer’s treatment certificate, which should demonatrate it complies with BS8417:2011 and guarantees the battens for a period of 60 years in normal use.

Avoiding Lead Thefts

Across the UK, we have experienced rising numbers of lead thefts over the past few years. It is probably due to the fact that lead prices have risen so high lately. The main targets include churches, schools and other public buildings. These types of buildings are left at high risk of leaks and building issues if there are missing tiles, therefore we need to crack down on the lead theives out there.

The complication many victims of lead theft are facing is that many home insurance companies don't cover the replacement work needed. The argument they give is that they don't cover theft if there has been no forcible break-in on the property.

Nobody wants to be sat staring out of the window all night, so here are some simple steps you could take to prevent these selfish theives:

1. Make sure all gates and fences are secured, especially at night.

2. Take a look at items such as your wheelie bin or perhaps any rubbish waiting to be moved, as theives are known to use these as ways to climb over high fences and gates.

3. Keep ladders locked up tight.

4. Install CCTV. This is an expensive option, however it is known to work extremely well when deterring theieves, as they know they are likely to be caught from the video evidence.

5. There are also several anti-climb paints available, meaning anyone who attempts to climb gutters or drain pipes will have a struggle.

A trend has been discovered for peak times of lead thefts taking place, and these tend to be school holidays and during fine weather conditions. So, by following the steps above and keeping an eye out during the school holidays, you should be able to avoid being a victim of lead theft.

Rolled (Milled) Lead Sheet

Lead sheet has been produced by rolling since the mid 1700's and by the turn of this Century, rolled (milled) Lead sheet was being used in the UK as an alternative to sand cast sheet for roofing and weathering.

Rolled Lead sheet is formed by passing a slab of refined lead back and forth on a rolling mill between closing rollers, computer controlled to obtain an exact predetermined thickness.

The sheet is then slit to width and cut to length for final packing and distribution.

When designing and installing lead sheet, due consideration must be given to the following areas:

Physical and mechanical properties of lead sheet
Contact with other materials
Bossing and welding methods
Jointing methods
Support and fixing methods
Prevention of corrosion

Rolled lead sheet can be used for:

Flashings to abutments on flat and pitched roofs
Protective Weathering’s to ledges and cornices

Why does lead sometimes go ‘white’?

When exposed to a damp atmosphere lead can form a coating of white lead oxide. This can cause a problem on a building as the oxide may wash off of the lead and stain the brickwork or tiling below. Fortunately, 'white stains' can simply be prevented by storing lead sheet rolls in a clean and dry area.

What’s the difference between milled lead and cast lead?

Generally, there are two different ways to produce lead sheet. Milled lead is manufactured by squeezing a solid block of lead through two rollers, while (machine) cast lead is produced by dipping a water-cooled rotating drum into a bath of molten lead. There’s a myth about milled lead being better than cast lead. But this is far from the truth; for milled lead to be ‘better’ than cast lead, it has to demonstrate some form of superiority - which it doesn’t.
